Liberté, egalité, and digital stuff

Since the US started threatening turning Canada into their 51st state, I have been looking into moving my digital assets from AWS to, well, literally anywhere else.

I did my own research (tm) and was a bit frustrated that there weren't any Canadian cloud providers, and a bit scared that a lot of Canadian digital business are at least partially owned by US equity money.

So, at some point I found The French.

The French have always had strong opinions about their freedom - for real. And French cloud is a thing. I found Scaleway a good solution for my problems.

Here, I shall describe what I did to move my assets from AWS to Scaleway. This site is 100% en France, mais oui.

Step 1: Obtain French Server

I acquired a Dedibox - which is what it sounds, a virtual server, from Scaleway. It runs Linux and I chose Ubuntu.

I also moved my domain to Scaleway, since I was moving my things there.

Step 2: Install things

I installed the things I needed. Which wasn't a lot, but still - Docker, Git.

On the server, I checked out my repo and ran my docker compose file.

Site's up

Et voilà!

Bienvenue chez Renata! Please have a croissant and relax, knowing that my money won't be endorsing any plans to turn Canada into a sub-state of the 56th Oblast. Merci!
